The background of these paintings represents a wall in which the eyes are carved. Surrounding the eye, we can see a number of Feitians flying. These original figures transmit the feeling of anti-gravity, but seem to be affected by an atmosphere. This is visible in the way the fabric flows, adhering to the body of the Feitians in a way that is not possible in the vacuum, and dancing in a constant flow around the central element of the eye, based in the designs of numerous halos found in the caves.

These two pieces show the same character, the iconic “reverse Pipa player”. In the third painting of the series this character can be seen in the inside of the pupil, completing the action of the musician characters outside the pupil, while in the fourth piece of the series we can see the pipa player as the main character, playing and dancing to the music played by the hidden musicians. The feeling of age and elegant roughness produced by the oxidation of the images is infused by adding iron particles mixed in a bonding agent and oxidizing it afterwards.

Shui Yue Guan Yin, a Bodhisattva found regularly in the Yuling caves in Gansu province is the primary figure in this pair of the Eyes of Dunhuang series paintings.

The elements and figures are to be found at various dimensions that once again permeate one another, both outside and inside the pupils of the eyes. Thus, the painting takes it’s meaning when observed as a unique but dynamic entity, where the moon can be located both at the hand of the Bodhisattva and illuminating the sea, with water also present in the bubbles and fog between the trees. The iron oxide, once again, highlights the flow of time, contrasting with the vivid colors of the iris of the eyes.
